Leading by Design: Innovative Composite Strategy

March 17, 2009

From design to certification, the Learjet 85 composite strategy is supported by the industry’s best. Helping to lead the way forward is the Bombardier Composite Advisory Council (BCAC). The council brings both internal and external industry expertise to the table via professionals who possess strong knowledge of composites. The BCAC is composed of Bombardier composite technology specialists and industry experts including NIAR research engineers and former FAA members.

In addition, we have selected NIAR, the National Institute for Aviation Research, as a key partner in the development of the Learjet 85. NIAR will provide material and structural testing as well as support for aircraft certification under Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR) Part 25. Through a long-term partnership, NIAR will be involved in FAA certification of the aircraft from the testing of coupon samples to the structural certification of full-scale components.

Tested by the world’s finest

NIAR’s Composites and Advanced Materials Laboratory is the institute’s largest lab in terms of staffing, capability and investments/expenditures. The lab specializes in developing cost-efficient manufacturing processes while providing thermal, mechanical and analysis tools. The Learjet 85 aircraft certification process will also involve NIAR’s Full-Scale Structural Testing Laboratory, comprised of the industry’s most qualified staff, with over 400 years of combined testing experience in the certification of composite aircraft.

The first all-composite structure business jet designed for type certification under FAR Part 25, the Learjet 85 is an extraordinary advancement in next generation flight. In addition to improving performance and minimizing drag through smoother aerodynamics, the all-composite airframe requires less maintenance, is easier to repair, and ensures extended service life. Passenger comfort is increased by allowing for the use of complex curves in the aircraft’s internal cross-section to manage overall composite wall thickness and ensure maximized cabin volume. The result is an aircraft like no other.

Bombardier has long been an advocate for innovation and a supporter of technological advancements within NIAR. This new partnership supports the plan to make the Learjet 85 a technologically advanced aircraft while further strengthening our important relationship.
